Frequently Asked Questions
What is an "adjustment"?
An adjustment is the name given to the technique used to induce a specific manipulative movement of a joint which is not moving as it should, and thus remove interference from the nervous system.
What is a "subluxation"?
A subluxation is a term referred to my chiropractors to describe a misaligned or dysfunctional spinal segment which can affect neuromusculoskeletal and visceral disorders.
The World Health Organisation defines it as:
"A lesion or dysfunction in a joint or motion segment in which alignment, movement integrity and / or physiological
function are altered, although contact between joint surfaces remains intact. It is essentially a functional entity,
which may influence biomechanical and neural intergrity."

Will it hurt?
A chiropractic adjustment should not hurt – although there may be some minor short-term discomfort such as mild ache or tightness as your body adapts to the corrections. If any discomfort occurs this is usually only during initial visits and will soon cease.
Do I need to be referred by my GP?
Because chiropractic is a primary health-care profession you do not need to be referred by your GP. However, if you have medical insurance, some companies do require a letter of referral from your GP.
Will I need X-Rays?
This depends on what your chiropractor finds in your initial consultation, but they can be invaluable in the chiropractor's diagnosis. The inclusion of X-rays will always be discussed with you first and can be arranged if necessary.
How often will I need to come?
Initially you will need more frequent adjustments in order to correct it and to allow those changes to not reverse again. The frequency of your visits then reduces as you respond to improved spinal function.
How long will it take it get better?
Chiropractic is not a quick fix and does not aim to quickly cover the pain or discomfort as drugs do. How long it takes to reach this will depend on the individual, their history, the nature of the complaint, their motivation, and the speed at which their own body heals.
What is Wellness?
Wellness care is something which those at Back On Track Chiropractic are passionate about. Wellness care refers to ongoing care for the individual, not only to prevent reoccurrence of an original injury or complaint, but to allow the body to perform and function at its optimum, thus being able to cope with life's stresses to the best of its ability. We encourage all our patients to seek regular chiropractic "check-ups" just as they do with the dentist, in order to detect any misalignments or areas for concern and correct them before they become a problem.
What is the difference between chiropractors and osteopaths?
The two professions are very similar in many ways, largely differing in training, technique and their philosophies.
